The Story Behind My Maxx Crosby Garage Mural

One of the most exciting projects I have completed as an artist was painting a large-scale garage mural featuring Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders. As a longtime Raiders fan and portrait artist, the opportunity to bring one of the team’s most dominant players to life on such a large surface was both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

The concept behind the mural was to capture the relentless intensity that Crosby brings to the field. Rather than focusing on a single portrait, I decided to create three separate images of Crosby across the garage door, with the name “MAXX” appearing behind the portraits. The goal was to create a dramatic composition that Raiders fans would immediately recognize and connect with.

To begin the project, I used a projector to establish the outlines of the portraits on the garage door. This allowed me to scale the images accurately across the large surface. From that point forward, the real work began: building layers of color, refining values, and carefully blending tones to create depth and realism.

Murals present unique challenges compared to smaller drawings. Working on a large outdoor surface requires careful planning, strong contrasts, and colors that remain vibrant in changing light conditions. Every detail had to be considered so that the mural would look strong both up close and from a distance.

For me, this mural represents more than just a portrait of a football player. It celebrates the energy, determination, and passion that define Raider Nation. Projects like this remind me why I love creating sports art and why the Raiders have inspired so many artists and fans over the years.
